Storage

Store in the fridge (vegetable drawer) if you intend to keep it green and use it for salads.

How to prepare

You can shred it and use it in salad, Som Tam or in curries.

Green papayas are harvested intentionally early, so they’re meant to stay green and crunchy, not to become sweet ripe fruit.

🥭 Green Papaya Salad (Som Tam)

Ingredients (2 servings):

  • 2 cups shredded green papaya

  • 1–2 cloves garlic

  • 1–2 bird’s eye chilies (adjust to taste 🌶️)

  • 8–10 cherry tomatoes, halved

  • 1–2 tbsp fish sauce

  • 1–2 tbsp lime juice

  • 1–2 tsp palm sugar (or brown sugar)

  • 1 tbsp dried shrimp (optional)

  • 2 tbsp roasted peanuts

  • Optional: long beans, shredded carrot

Method:

  1. In a mortar & pestle, lightly pound garlic + chilies

  2. Add palm sugar, fish sauce, and lime juice → mix until dissolved

  3. Toss in tomatoes + long beans and gently bruise them

  4. Add shredded papaya → lightly pound & mix (don’t crush, just combine)

  5. Finish with dried shrimp + peanuts, toss everything together

Adjust to your taste!

Quick tips 🌱

  • If no mortar & pestle: just mix everything in a bowl and lightly toss

  • For a milder version (kids-friendly), skip or reduce the chilies

  • Best eaten fresh and cold
