ShiokFarm Proudly Announces B Corp Certification
Pioneer in 100% certified organic community supported agriculture in Singapore, ShiokFarm earns socially responsible business recognition just months after receiving a global prize on entrepreneurship.
Going Beyond Organic: Our B Corp Certification
We are immensely proud to announce that ShiokFarm has been certified as a B Corporation™ (B Corp™) furthering our commitment toward operating our business as a force for good. The certification comes less than a year after ShiokFarm's founder Claire Chabrieres, won a global prize for entrepreneurship delivered by the French Minister of Foreign Trade in Paris.
What is the B Corp certification?
The B Corp certification, which is managed by the nonprofit organization B Lab, is one of the few certifications that thoroughly evaluates a company's overall social and environmental impact. To become a Certified B Corporation, companies undergo a rigorous review (more than 300 questions!) and must meet a minimum verified score on the B Impact Assessment. Only about 50% of applicants are successful.
For a little over 11 months, B Lab reviewed our company's operations and business model impact on our workers, community, environment and customers. We had to prove a clear commitment to stakeholder governance, and demonstrate accountability and transparency.
In short, B Corp certification requires companies to consider their impact on all stakeholders, not just their bottom line.
This certification is an important milestone for us as a business, for our team, and for our members too.
Making a positive impact
Although we have lived and breathed these standards from the very beginning, we now have the B Corp framework to help us achieve even more. This is extremely positive and will be most helpful.
“We have always been on a mission to supply affordable 100% certified organic fresh fruit & vegetables to our members in a responsible way,” said Claire Chabrieres, Founder & Director of ShiokFarm. Joining a network of like-minded organizations is exciting and inspiring. We can now collectively promote business for good. We are honored to receive this distinction and become part of the B Corp community.”
For the past 7 years, we have continuously tried to lower our CO2 emissions. We have spent countless hours looking for new ways to reuse, reduce and recycle whatever we use. We have donated food to the Cheshire Home’s residents, accounting for 1.4% of our revenue; We have donated food to our team of 10 packers, accounting for 0.8% of our total revenue as we believe it is a company’s responsibility to care for its employees. We have also planted 4,200 trees to offset our collective carbon footprint, both in Singapore and in Indonesia.
Being B Corp™ Certified signifies that we are walking the talk and are committed to being a sustainable and ethical business.
Team work is essential
All this is only possible thanks to our fantastic community of ShiokFarmers, to the best team a founder could dream of, and brilliant partner farmers who are all certified organic (and can prove it) and of course the Nature who blesses us every week with its harvest.
So much more can be done. So much more should be done. This is exactly what we are going to focus on for the next three years, until our next B Impact Assessment.
We hope that by becoming B Corp™ Certified, we will inspire other businesses – big and small – to do the same. We believe that businesses can (and should!) be a force for good in the world.
Note: This would probably not have happened without the precious help and guidance of Lucie Grosso. Thank you Lucie. 💞
